LIDAR Remote Sensing

LIDAR is an acronym for Light Detection And Ranging. For a complete overview of how LIDAR works see the NOAA site http://www.csc.noaa.gov/products/sccoasts/html/tutlid.htm,

Simply put LIDAR is a combination of aerial laser scanning technology coupled with a GPS system. LIDAR data allows for precise measurements of elevation, but much of the usefulness of the technology comes from the density of the collected data. LIDAR data can provide measurements of ground features, vegetation and buildings. It allows GIS data analysis in many new and useful ways. A variety of features can be extracted from LIDAR data including trails, salmon habitat, wetland boundaries, trees and utility poles.
